Training for General Purpose Rating (GPR)
General Purpose rating (GPR) is a 6-month course & 6- months shipboard training that is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills required to work as a Deckhand on board merchant vessels. The course focuses on developing the students’ practical skills and knowledge in seamanship, navigation, and cargo handling, maintenance of deck and engine room.
Duration: 6 Months (Full Time) + 6 months on board ship training.

- About The Course
General Purpose rating (GPR) is a 6-month course & 6- months shipboard training that is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills required to work as a Deckhand on board merchant vessels. The course focuses on developing the students’ practical skills and knowledge in seamanship, navigation, and cargo handling, maintenance of deck and engine room.
The course curriculum covers a range of topics related to shipping and seamanship, including navigation, maintenance. Students will also receive training in firefighting, first aid, survival at sea, and other essential skills.
After the course, students will be required to undergo 6 months practical training on board ships, which will enable them to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of ship operations, including navigation, cargo handling, and maintenance.

- Eligibility Criteria
Admission Test:
- Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 10th standard with Science, Mathematics as subjects.
- The candidate must have secured minimum 40% marks in English in 10th standard exams.
Note:
- The candidate must have passed the 10th standard from a recognised board.
OR
- Pass in 2 year I.T.I course from Government approved institute with minimum 50% aggregate marks in final year.
- The candidate must have secured minimum 40% marks in English in 10th standard exams.

OR
- Diploma or Degree holders.
- Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 10th Standard with Science, Mathematics as subjects.
- The candidates must have secured minimum 40% marks in English in 10th standard exams.

- The candidate must have passed the 10th standard from a recognised board.
- The diploma or degree must be recognised by any State or Central Government or the AICTE.
- The maximum age limit for degree or diploma is raised with a condition that these candidates are provided shipboard training within one year of completion of course.
Admission Test:
- Qualified in Online Common Entrance Test (CET)
- Shipping Company Sponsorship Test (SCST)
Age:
The maximum age limit is 17.5 to 27 years. *Conditions Apply
Medical:
- Candidates must be medically fit including eyesight and hearing as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000, as amended.
- No colour Blindness.
- Career Scope
Upon completion of the course and appropriate sea time, the students may progress to become Ordinary Seaman, Able seaman, Oiler.
